Employee Q&A

Life as a Software Engineer (Belfast)

Adrian Santos

"Calnex seem to genuinely care about their employees. From the first conversation I was able to tell there is a lot of focus on employee’s health and happiness, and flexibility to accommodate work and life balance. A great example of this is the benefits package."

What did you study and where?

I studied a Bsc in Telecoms Engineering and a Msc in Business Development at the University of Vigo (Spain).

How long have you worked with Calnex and what attracted you to join?

I've been working for Calnex for about 4 months now as a Software Engineer. I was looking for a small or medium sized company with a modern and open culture as well as a challenging role where I could apply and broaden my knowledge. Calnex seemed like a good fit.

What advice would you give to someone who is looking to change career during Lockdown (COVID)?

Go for it because we won’t get these days, weeks and months back again. If it feels right - do it!

What helped solidify your decision to relocate from Spain and join the Calnex team at our Belfast office?

Calnex seemed to genuinely care about their employees. From the first conversation we had I was able to tell there is a lot of focus on employee’s health and happiness, and flexibility to accommodate work and life balance. One example of this is the great benefits package.

How do you feel the onboarding process has been during Lockdown?

Switching jobs can be tough not to mention that I relocated to Belfast from Spain in the middle of the COVID pandemic. It doesn’t sound easy, but everything turned out very well and everything went really smoothly. The team at Calnex were really flexible with my needs and always in touch in case I needed help. Onboarding remotely has been great. There were a lot of online meetings during my first few weeks where I was provided with everything that I needed.

Please talk us through a typical day at Calnex?

Depending on the day, my tasks can be to develop new features, fix bugs, review code from other team members or do some testing. Every morning we have a stand-up meeting, which keeps us aware of what everyone is doing, and sometimes we have other meetings where we discuss and share ideas, organise work or just have a quick chat. The flexible working hours allow me to take a longer break at lunch time and go to the gym or for a run, which is great!

What’s the most challenging aspect of your job?

I’d say one of the most challenging things is working with a wide range of technologies, from low-level high-performance C++ code to high level web backend development. But this also keeps things interesting as there is always something to learn.

What do you enjoy most about your job?

I enjoy the challenge of making complex products that are used by many customers all around the world. There is a very nice work atmosphere here. You always feel respected both professionally and personally. There is a lot of trust and you certainly feel encouraged to come up with and share new ideas. You are given space to work by yourself, but everyone has a friendly and approachable attitude. You always get enough support whenever you need it.

Have you managed to build new relationships easily since you’ve joined Calnex?

Yes, there are many activities organized by HR (fitness classes, virtual tea breaks, quizzes...). Last month we had a company Christmas escape room and Christmas quiz. As well as this, everyone is always up for a chat.

Is there anything you are especially looking forward to for when it’s possible to work in the office again?

I would obviously like to meet the rest of the team in person. And also, we have planned to have a team lunch at some point post pandemic which I am looking forward to!

What do you do for downtime?

When I am not working, I like to do sports, go for walks and explore new places. Before lockdown, I used to do a lot of judo and play football, something I can’t wait to be able to do again!
