Ensuring media integrity when we move to IP

It’s time to let the industry know whether the move to IP for transport and PTP for synchronization is going to be OK. IP-based mechanisms for professional media offers producers & broadcasters the ability to ensure that their media is viewed as the director originally intended — on any screen, anywhere and at the highest possible quality.

The SMPTE ST 2110 Professional Media Over Managed IP Networks suite of standards is underpinning this move and is a contributing factor for the adoption of one common internet protocol (IP)-based mechanism. Standards specify the carriage, synchronization, and description of separate elementary essence streams over IP for real-time production, playout, and other professional media applications and are focused on ensuring interoperability as the industry evolves further into IT and IP-based workflows.

Confidence in deliverability
These products must be tested under the real-world network conditions in which they will be performing. The Calnex SNE is an IP Network Emulator that enables vendors and broadcasters to ensure that the SMPTE ST 2110 standards can be met when their technology is utilised across varying real-life scenarios.

In addition, the IEEE-1588 Precision Timing Protocol is the time and synchronization methodology that needs to be deployed over these IP networks. Again, the Calnex Paragon-ONE is the industry standard to prove PTP performance with support for SMPTE ST-2059-2, AES67, and AES67+SMPTE ST-2059-2.
