Julie-Anne Niblock

Project Manager

Q: When and why did you join Calnex?

I joined Calnex in October 2022, so officially just completed my 3-months here! The prospect of taking on new challenges in a new industry has always motivated me. With Calnex’s expertise in network synchronization and emulation, it was an instant attraction. As someone who previously worked in software-based B2B and B2C products across different industries, switching to hardware-based B2B products in communications was a great opportunity for me to challenge myself and create products that contribute to a better-connected world.

Q: What did you study and where?

I have a BSc in Geography from Queens – this followed with a fast-track course for non-IT graduates where I learnt programming which led to my career in IT, starting as a programmer, then a Business Analyst and Project Manager.

Q: How long have you worked at Calnex and what attracted you to join?

7 months – having worked extensively in software houses and digital agencies, I was looking for something a little different with more responsibility. Calnex offered this, plus the great company benefits were also a big selling point

Q: What motivates or energizes you about your role and working life at Calnex?

It’s a constant learning curve for me – It is my first time working in an Engineering company, and also working with physical products (as well as software). Every day is different.

Q: Talk us through a typical day at Calnex?

I work 2 days in the office, and 3 days at home. My day starts between 8.30 and 9.00 (depending on school runs etc), I’ll run through emails and messages in the morning, and checklist what I am doing for the day. We have daily stand ups at 10am. Beyond that, and other regular weekly meetings, my day is a mixture of adhoc meetings and time in between to catch up on emails, prep for checkpoints, update status reports, plan new projects, brainstorm new features and many other things. There is no ‘typical’ day beyond my regular meetings.

Q: What do you enjoy most about your Job?

I enjoy my line management duties as a happy team is key in project delivery. I also enjoy project planning, and working with the team to brainstorm new features, create user stories etc

Q: Most challenging aspects of your job?

Multi-tasking – there are days which are meeting heavy, as well as having lots of things to action without clear priorities – this can be a challenge  – that is where I find writing lists useful – also satisfying when you manage to check all of them off for the day / week 😊

Q: What skills do you need to succeed in the role?

Great communication skills, empathy with colleagues and in particular your team, good organisation skills, good at multi tasking – that is just some!

What do you do for downtime?

I love hiking, walking the dogs and doing CrossFit. Outside of that I don’t have too much
