Graduate System Test Engineer

Mattia Merati

What did you study and where?

I completed an HNC in Software Development at Edinburgh College before progressing to Edinburgh Napier University, where I obtained my Bachelor’s degree in Software Engineering.

What initially attracted you to the Graduate role at Calnex?

What drew me to the role at Calnex is the strong emphasis on learning and development. Being the start of my career, joining a company where I could provide value while continuing to grow my technical and interpersonal skills was a priority. Seeing how committed Calnex is to supporting graduates made the opportunity really stand out.

Tell us any highlights you have experienced since starting with Calnex.

From day one, everyone at Calnex welcomed me as a genuine member of the team. Without any prior experience in this niche field, the team trusted me with real responsibilities and supported me as I learned. That support played a huge role in how quickly I was able to develop.

Another standout moment was being invited to attend the ITSF conference, where I had the opportunity to connect with other companies and professionals in the industry. This experience helped me gain a deeper understanding on the importance of timing & sync, and how the work we do at Calnex contributes to the wider ecosystem.

What do you enjoy most about your job?

I really enjoy the daily challenges that come with the role. No two days are the same, and I’m constantly solving intricated problems that require critical thinking and creativity. It’s the type of environment where you’re always learning and growing with the rest of the team.

I also like the collaborative aspect. Many challenges require working with colleagues across different areas to derive a solution. These interactions are especially interesting, as they give me insight into areas of product development that I wouldn’t typically encounter in my day-to-day work.

What advice would you give to anyone considering a Graduate role at Calnex?

It’s not necessary to come in with deep knowledge of the industry. This field is quite niche, and most people have completely different backgrounds. What matters most is your attitude towards learning and your ability to be a critical thinker. If you bring enthusiasm and a problem-solving mindset, Calnex will give you all the support and training you need to succeed in the role.

Tell us something that surprised you about Calnex when you came?

I was genuinely surprised by how supportive, inclusive, and trusting the environment is. From the moment you join the company, everyone places trust in you, encourage your ideas, and give you the space to grow. If you put in the effort, you quickly become an important part of the team.
